Uber hires Goldman Sachs to power up its fundraising drive

first_imgUber has hired Goldman Sachs to help it raise funds from some of the bank’s richest clients. It is offering financial products that could raise hundreds of billions of dollars, and help aid Uber’s future international expansion plans, Fortune has said. This is separate to a previous report from Bloomberg, which said Uber was in early talks to raise $1bn to fund growth. The ever-expanding taxi app is already available in 50 countries including the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.Goldman Sachs is already an institutional investor in Uber, according to the Financial Times. If the company opted to float, it’s likely the investment bank would vie for a leading role. However, at present, it has no confirmed plans to do so.To date, Uber has raised funds from, among others, Fidelity Investments, Google Ventures and BlackRock. The ride-sharing service, which is headquartered in San Francisco, has courted controversy since coming to London around two years ago.London’s  Licensed Taxi Drivers Association organised thousands of cabbies to stage a protest against the company, bringing London’s streets to a standstill in June. They were joined by cab drivers from all over Europe who were unsatisfied with Uber’s regulatory status. Citi share price falls after bank announces $2.7bn legal costs

first_img Show Comments ▼ Shares in Citigroup have fallen by over two per cent in early morning trading, after the US bank revealed it would be taking a $3.5bn (£2.23bn) charge for legal and restructuring operations. The charges are expected to eat up huge chunks of the bank’s fourth quarter profits, yet Citi insisted that it still expects to be “marginally profitable” for the period. Around $2.7bn has been set aside to deal with legal investigations into the bank’s activity. Citi traders have been implicated in the forex rate rigging scandal and the rigging of the Libor interbank lending rate.  Furthermore, in October a unit of the bank’s Mexican subsidiary Banamex was found to be involved in illegal conduct including fraud and the use of intercepted telecommunications.  On top of legal costs, the bank will take a $800m charge for “repositioning costs” as the company looks to descale its international operations. In October Citi was forced to restate its third quarter results due to a “$600m increase in legal accruals”.  Citi chief executive Michael Corbat said: We have made significant progress in simplifying and streamlining our company, and these repositioning actions will further enhance our ability to serve our clients efficiently and focus on those areas with the greatest potential for returns.  Also, we believe these legal charges should cover a significant portion of our outstanding legal matters based on current information. Orange Wednesdays cancelled: Cinema ticket prices have risen by 47 per cent in the 10 years since promotion was introduced

first_img Tags: NULL Joe Hall whatsapp Share Show Comments ▼ Orange Wednesdays cancelled: Cinema ticket prices have risen by 47 per cent in the 10 years since promotion was introduced center_img whatsapp EE is pulling the plug on Orange Wednesdays.  The promotion, which for 10 years has offered two-for-one deals on cinema tickets and Pizza Express restaurants for all Orange users, will come to an end on 25 February next year. Although Valentine’s Day crowds will manage to sneak in a final two-for-one deal for the Fifty Shades of Grey film, fans of Star Wars, the Avengers and Terminator will have to make do with full prices. Teenage couples will now have to find a new date idea. In a statement on its website, EE brand Orange said that at one stage the offer was a “massive success and an iconic promotion”. However, it added: “After 10 great years our brand has changed and our customers’ viewing habits have evolved so it’s time to move on. “That’s why the final credits will roll for Orange Wednesday at the end of February 2015.” ‘Viewing habits’ now include streaming services such as Netflix which allow users the chance to watch a multitude of movies on mobile devices. Since launching in the UK in 2012, Netflix has picked up a massive 3m subscribers while Amazon Prime Instant video has 1.2m signed up to its service in the UK. Potential cinema-goers may also be put off by increasingly expensive tickets, with prices over the last decade rising faster than inflation. When Orange launched the scheme in 2003, the average ticket price in the UK stood at £4.43 according to official figures collected by the British Film Institute (BFI). The average price since risen by over 47.6 per cent to £6.54 – beating the 41.97 per cent inflation rate over the same period of time.  Statistics for this year have not yet been collated by BFI, but it is likely they will continue to rise for the now Orange Wednesdays-less population. It should be added that the BFI’s calculations do not take into account discounts such as the two-for-one deal, so the true average ticket price on offer may in fact be higher. With rocketing prices and alternative viewing platforms, it’s easy to see why audiences may be opting out of the cinema and instead choosing to boot up the laptop and put popcorn in the microwave and stay home. However, it may be too early to conclude that the British public really is turning away from the cinema in their droves.  Last year a total of 165.5m admissions were recorded by the BFI. That was the lowest total for five years, and a four per cent increase on 2012’s 172.5m. However, as the below graph reveals, total cinema admissions in the UK have fluctuated between 155m and 175m for the last decade and until 2012 had been rising steadily for three years.   Cineworld has reported growth in revenues and sales this year, while Odeon hardly sounded pessimistic when, in its latest financial report, it described the UK market as continuing to “perform very strongly”. There’s no statistical trend suggesting we’ve all given up on the multiplex magic just yet, but some movie-goer’s passions may be put to the test in the coming years without their treasured two-for-one deal. The banker and politician started the foundation when he was 65 after being bedridden with illness for almost a month. With no children, he thought it was time to start thinking about what happened with his wealth once he and his wife Alice had passed away. As one of Sweden’s wealthiest individuals, he’d already been inundated with requests, leading him to say: “I am inclined to give away most of my fortune at once, in order to be left alone and to simply say no to everyone.” Hence, in 1917 the Wallenberg Foundation was established with £1.7m and the aim of promoting scientific research, teaching and education of benefit to Sweden. As one of the largest private financiers of research in Europe, it makes grants in two main areas: research projects of high scientific potential and support of “excellent” scientists. The foundation primarily grants funding in natural sciences, technology, and medicine and since its foundation it has made grants totalling more than £1.36bn. This year, it announced the launch of an initiative to create a new centre for molecular medicine at the University of Gothenburg, with funding of at least £1.7m from the foundation. “We’re looking to boost core skills so that Sweden can once again lead the world in this field,” said Peter Wallenberg Jr, vice chairman of the foundation. For the full World Charity Index 2014 list take a look at our interactive graphic  Express KCS last_img read more

The drips aim to alleviate the crushing effects of a brutal hangover. Inserted into the arm, the drips take about 30 minutes to diffuse the anti-alcohol-goodness into the blood stream.  The cause of the hangovers is often the pressure many in the city are under to entertain clients until late in the evening. Blakely said: There are a lot of people around here who can’t afford to have a day off because of a hangover, so I have been out to a lot of people’s homes and hotel rooms to put up drips for them. There’s an expectation and pressure where these people have to go out to party. Brokers in the City that make their money at night entertaining clients – it’s these guys who ask for it the most. It is a popular thing for hangovers, because a hangover is essentially dehydration. So it can not only help treat that it will also give you the vitamin boost to feel a lot better and get rid of the toxins in the body. Vitamin drips are also used by athletes and people recovering from illness. The current sanctions against Russia are designed to squeeze the political elite, and have a minimal impact on its citizens. But Kerry warned new measures would have a broader societal effect, piling pressure onto Putin.”If this failure continues, make no mistake, there will be further consequences, including consequences that will put added strains on Russia’s already troubled economy,” he said. “We are not going to sit back and allow this kind of cynical, craven behaviour to continue at the expense of the sovereignty of another nation.”The ceasefire, which ended the 10-month conflict when it came into force of February 15, was broken within hours. The news comes days after Tesco unveiled full-year losses of almost £6.4bn, almost the biggest loss in UK corporate history, and considerably higher than the £5bn analysts had expected. The news sent Tesco’s share price down five per cent on Wednesday. Today Fitch said it expected the supermarket’s free cash flow generation to be “impacted by the timing of restructuring charges and working capital effects associated with changes to supplier relationships.”These, despite discipline on shareholder returns and investments, have led to a spike in leverage and a financial risk profile, including asset disposals, that is more aligned with a ‘BB+’ rating.” last_img read more

The decline was attributable to a seven per cent drop in exports. So far this year, 74.5 per cent of cars produced in the UK have been sold to foreigners. Yet the weakness in exports was offset by a massive boost in UK demand, with car sales to the domestic market soaring by 19.4 per cent on the year.Three of the four largest export markets for car manufacturers have struggled economically over the last 12 months. The Eurozone countries, which make up most of the economy of the EU, have struggled to sustain an economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis and nearly entered a triple dip recession last year. China’s annual economic growth slowed to seven per cent at the beginning of 2015, the lowest rate of growth since 2009.Russia’s economy has been hit by economic sanctions put in place in response its involvement in the annexation of the Crimea, with one official recently predicting the economy would contract by 2.5 per cent this year.SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes believes UK car production could hit record levels if global markets pick up.“Manufacturers across the country are poised to see yet more growth following multi billion pound investments and, providing global markets perform well, output is on track to reach record levels in the next few years,” he said. whatsapp whatsapp Tags: Manufacturing sectorlast_img read more
