Devon Walker Injured Tulane Player Showing Progress

Tulane University safety Devon Walker, who suffered a broken neck against Tulsa on Saturday, was “alert and responsive,” when addressed by family and friends on Monday, according to Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson.Walker was transported to St. Francis Hospital, where on Sunday he underwent three hours of surgery to stabilize his spine. Tulane team doctor Greg Stewart told ABC the procedure was “very successful.”“[The paralysis potential] is certainly a concern,” Stewart told the Tulsa World, “We don’t know what the ultimate outcome is going to be.”As with any severe spine injury, hours are long and dicey and reveal frustratingly little. It will be days or weeks before Walker’s prognosis is determined. He remains in stable condition in the ICU, with significant swelling around his spine. But late on Monday, Dickson shared a touching story on a Tulane conference call.Although Dickson could not give much in the way of a medical update, he said Devon “has not lost his sense of humor.”Dickson shared a story of a conversation he had with one of the nurses about something very important to the 21-year-old, three-year letterman: his hair.“I told [Devon] one of the things that almost occurred was [a nurse] cutting [his] hair,” Dickson said. “I wanted him to know I put up a fight.”Dickson said Walker glanced up from his hospital bed and “gave me that look: ‘Really? Did she really say that?’ ”Then he smiled.Asked if Walker’s hair was cut, Dickson gave a vociferous, “No!”The crown of Walker’s helmet collided with that of a teammate as the two tried to make a tackle, and it was clear Walker was seriously injured. “We quickly realized it was a significant event,” Dickson said.Medical staff from both teams rushed the field and worked on Walker for more than 20 minutes before an ambulance took him from the stadium. Several coaches were in tears as a prayer was led inside the Tulsa stadium.A Tulane website for Walker has been flooded with messages of support. Walker’s parents, Booker and Inez, released a statement saying, “We have been overwhelmed by the amount of concerned well wishes we have received from all over the world. Although we cannot respond individually to all, we thank everyone for the love and support shown to Devon and our family. The medical care that our son has received so far has been outstanding.” read more

Scripps Health breaks ground on 59 Million Prebys Cancer Center

first_img SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A $59 million cancer center to be built at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego in Hillcrest will be named for the late philanthropist Conrad Prebys, Scripps Health announced Friday. The 40,000-square-foot, four-story Presbys Cancer Center will serve patients from the central and southern areas of the county. It will be the second dedicated cancer center built as part of Scripps Health’s partnership with the University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center; the other is located in Torrey Pines.Prebys donated $20 million to Scripps Health for the outpatient facility in 2016, the year he died, and also funded a $5 million grant for an endowed medical director position within the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center partnership.“Through his many years of generous support, Conrad Prebys has significantly improved the quality of health care for our community,” Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder said at a groundbreaking ceremony. “Prebys Cancer Center will continue Conrad’s legacy by providing access to exceptional cancer care to residents in our central and southern regions of San Diego County.”The facility will feature cutting-edge radiation therapy technology, a 20-chair infusion center for treatments like chemotherapy, spaces for conferences and patient consultations and offices for physicians. A 140-space parking garage adjacent to the facility is expected to be completed by 2022.The new cancer center will be located on Fifth Avenue at the Hillcrest campus. Scripps Health expects the facility to open in early 2022. With New GM Hire Thrillist Looks to Expand Beyond Newsletters

first_imgJackThreads, a digital discount shopping club that Thrillist bought two years ago that now has more than 2 million members, will also be expanded with more website content. With projected 2012 revenues in the range of $60 million, Guelton says Thrillist has been profitable for the last five years. The company also secured a $13 million series A round led by Oak Investment Partners. Thrillist, a men’s lifestyle publisher, has hired former Maxim digital editorial director Gene Newman as general manager. The newly created position will execute on a strategy to expand the Thrillist brand as a destination site beyond its email subscription roots.Thrillist, which now has about 3 million daily subscribers, will broaden its locally-based food and drink curation into other categories such as travel, gadgets and sports and entertainment, says Philippe Guelton, the former COO of Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., who became Thrillist’s president in March. (Newman also has ties to Hachette, where he was editorial director of the company’s digital properties.)”We have such a strong authority and loyalty from our audience in our verticals and yet we don’t have a great web experience,” says Guelton. “When it comes to the web, you have so many layers of content you can provide. How Kalmbach Turned Two of Its Strengths Into a New Magazine

first_img Drone 360 will be available next month, aiming to serve a growing audience with interest in the small, unmanned aircrafts known as drones. It’ll focus on both individual use cases—tips and tricks content that mirrors the stories you’d find in a hobby title like Bead & Button, another Kalmbach magazine—and the larger conversation and controversy around drone use. “As far as marketing, what made this such great title for us is that, in addition to promoting it through Discover’s distribution channels, we can also cross-promote in our other titles, especially Trains and American Snowmobiler,” George says. “These readers are intensely curious about RC drones. The aerial photography capabilities—getting that birds-eye view—really appeals to them as part of their respective hobbies. “ “We have a product development committee that’s been evaluating a number of opportunities, but this one resonated for me,” says Steve George, editor-in-chief of Discover and editorial director of Drone 360. “Working on Discover, we see a lot of tech trends, and you can’t ignore what a burgeoning industry multi-rotor drones have become. It’s a hobby with enormous potential, and nobody understands passion brands and enthusiast publishing better than Kalmbach. But there’s another component here, which is the promise-and-peril part of drones. These devices have become part of a national discussion.” The $7.99 magazine will have an initial print run of about 35,000 issues, distributed both at newsstands, using Discover’s bipad, and in hobby shops where Discover doesn’t sell, but other Kalmbach hobby titles do. It’ll also be available as a digital edition. Kalmbach is taking the merging-two-worlds approach past content philosophy and applying it to areas like distribution and marketing for Drone 360.center_img With a portfolio that includes magazines like Model Railroader, Astronomy, Scale Auto, and close to a dozen other titles aimed at different types of tinkerers, Kalmbach Publishing is heavily invested in hobbyists. Its biggest title, Discover, focuses on big picture developments in areas like science and technology though. The company’s latest launch is a merging of the two. George notes that the magazine is a single-issue special issue publication (SIP) right now, but says he’s optimistic it’ll be expanded into a quarterly. The 92-page launch issue had a low ad bar, but it’s on pace to outsell its budget, he says.last_img read more

Interpol chief resigns after detention in China

first_imgInterpol president Meng Hongwei poses during a visit to the headquarters of International Police Organisation in Lyon, France, 8 May, 2018. Photo: ReutersThe Chinese head of Interpol resigned as Beijing announced Monday he was under investigation for allegedly breaking domestic law, while his wife voiced concern for his life following his disappearance.China had been tight-lipped about the fate of Meng Hongwei, who is also vice minister for public security, since French officials disclosed on Friday that he had been reported missing after leaving France for China last month. His case could tarnish Beijing’s efforts to gain leadership posts in international organisations, but it is also a black eye for France-based Interpol, which is tasked with finding missing people, analysts say.His wife, Grace, told reporters in Lyon, where Interpol is headquartered, that she was concerned after receiving a text message from her husband with a knife emoji.China’s National Supervisory Commission, which handles corruption cases involving public servants, broke the official silence early Monday, saying in a one-line statement that Meng “is currently under investigation on suspicion of violating the law”.Soon after, Interpol said it had received Meng’s resignation “with immediate effect”.It is the latest high-profile disappearance in China, where a number of top government officials, billionaire business magnates and even an A-list celebrity have vanished for weeks or months at a time. When — or if — they reappear, it is often in court.Meng, the first Chinese president of Interpol, was last heard from on September 25 as he left Lyon.Interpol’s secretary general Juergen Stock, who oversees day-to-day operations, said Saturday the agency was seeking “clarification” on his whereabouts.Meng was appointed in 2016, despite concerns from human rights groups, giving Chinese President Xi Jinping a win in his bid to paint the communist-led country as a responsible player in global affairs. But his disappearance could be a setback for China.”Any international organisation should think twice going forward before considering a Chinese candidate to be its head,” Bonnie Glaser, senior Asia adviser at Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies, told AFP.- Danger emoji -Meng had lived with his wife and two children in France since 2016.Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Meng’s wife Grace said she had received a message from his phone containing a knife emoji before his disappearance. That day, she said he sent a message telling her to “wait for my call”, before sending the emoji signifying danger.”This matter belongs to the international community,” she told a press conference with her back turned to the cameras out of fear for her safety.”I’m not sure what has happened to him,” she said.China’s recently established National Supervisory Commission holds sweeping powers to investigate public servants, with few requirements for transparency.Although the commission did not detail the allegations against Meng, its mandate is to probe corruption cases as part of Xi’s anti-graft campaign. Some critics of the effort — which has punished more than one million officials — say it also functions as a tool for Xi to eliminate his political rivals.- Red notices -Meng rose through the ranks of the country’s domestic security apparatus when it was under the leadership of Zhou Yongkang, a rival to Xi and the highest-ranking official to be brought down on corruption charges.Zhou — who was jailed for life in 2014 — was subsequently accused of conspiring to seize state power. He appointed Meng vice security minister in 2004.In that role, Meng has been entrusted with a number of sensitive portfolios, including the country’s counter-terrorism division, and was in charge of the response to several major incidents in China’s fractious western region of Xinjiang.Critics of Meng’s rise to Interpol’s presidency said he would use the position to help China target dissidents abroad.Interpol has downplayed the concerns, saying the president has little influence over the organisation’s day-to-day operations. The Chinese effort to track down corrupt officials abroad, known as Operation Fox Hunt, has led to claims in some countries that Chinese law-enforcement agents have been operating covertly on their soil without authorisation.China currently has 44 outstanding red notices, mostly related to murder, intentional injury and drug smuggling, according to Interpol’s website.During Meng’s tenure, Interpol issued a red notice for fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui, who threatened to reveal corruption at the country’s highest levels and is himself accused by Chinese authorities of money laundering.last_img read more
